John Stevens Henslow, Tayloria, c. 1840

The unusual image on this cotton tea towel depicts the microscopic details of a moss and is taken from a remarkable series of botanical teaching charts by John Stevens Henslow (1796 - 1861), Professor of Botany at the University of Cambridge. Of Henslow's many achievements, probably the best known are securing his student and protégé Charles Darwin's place upon the H.M.S. Beagle, and establishing Cambridge University Botanic Garden at it's current beautiful site. The Whipple Museum of the History of Science holds a large number of Henslow's teaching diagrams within their collection, all created with great care and artistic skill.
