About Samplers at the Fitzwilliam Museum

The Fitzwilliam Museum holds an important collection of over four hundred historic samplers. Stemming from both sides of the English channel, and spanning the 17th to the 20th Century, these samplers are both beautiful works of art, and important historical artefacts in their own right.

In our recorded histories the lives, thoughts and achievements of ordinary, middle or lower class women has often gone unrecorded. For many, embroidery is the only evidence of their existence that has survived.

The 2017 exhibition, Sampled Lives showcased over 100 examples of samplers from the Fitzwilliam’s collection, with deliberate focus on their importance as documentary evidence of the lived experiences of young women. The beautifully embroidered and stitched samplers cast bright illumination on the lives of girls and women from the mid-17th Century to the early 20th Century. Encompassing education, employment, religion, family, societal status and needlework skills.
